What is a transition cut? The modern round brilliant cut was invented by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919.  He mathematically worked out the angles required in a diamond so that all the light coming in through the top would be refracted and reflected back out the top.  As the world did not have internet back then it took longer for new ideas to be gain a footing.  Thus we see the adoption of this new idea over the next 40 years or so as diamond cutters put their own "bent" on the improved cut.  Most noticeable is the reduction of the size of the open culet.  The culet is when the bottom pointy bit of the diamond is polished flat.  See here a diagram
