What is a Spinel you ask.

Spinel has often been mistaken for Ruby in history.  The large Black Princes Ruby in the Crown jewels is actually a Spinel.
Spinel is a single refractive gemstone and thus it has one main colour. It has a hardness of 8 and hence is very durable.  Where Ruby is double refractive and can have tones of purplish red or orangy red when you look at the gem from different angles.

What is a Flanders cut? The Flanders Ideal Square Cut originally designed for diamonds works really well for spinel too.  The cut has the visual outline of a square shape but it has four short sides and four long sides, almost like a square radiant with its four cut corners.
