Retro Jewellery
The late 1930s and 1940s saw a shift in jewellery styles following the end of Art Deco’s geometric designs at the 1937 Paris Exhibition. Organisers encouraged diversity and ornamentation in designs, leading to motifs like scrolls, flowers, and animals adorned with coloured stones. This era saw technical innovations, including Van Cleef & Arpels’ invisible setting and versatile convertible jewellery that transformed into different pieces. World War II impacted materials, with platinum scarce and palladium used instead. Lower karat gold with a reddish tinge, due to copper alloys, became popular, and jewellers often repurposed clients’ existing materials. Limited gemstone access led to synthetic substitutes, smaller stones in pavé settings, and vivid enamels to accentuate designs. Despite wartime austerity, jewellery continued to add feminine touches to the era’s often masculine fashion trends.
